Blogging in the Classroom

As a high school English teacher, I believe that blogs could be used in my classroom in a variety of ways. We could have a class discussion about a particular piece of literature we may be studying in class. Blogging may be a way for some students to find their "voice". I have seen through things like Instant Messaging and Facebook that students who may be shy and quiet in class enjoy sharing information digitally. I also think that posting student's work is a way of highlighting their abilities, and it is something they can be proud of and show their parents, etc...

  1. What if you have the students write and post poetry on the blog? If you use the blog during this unit students would be able to post their voice without reading out loud to the class. The poems could have the students demonstrate figurative language, mood, tone, voice, etc. Then other students could post two positive comments and one question for 5 poems. This could be a project for the unit and an easy way for you to grade without taking home a million papers.

I like the idea of showcasing student work but then some students may not be showcased all of the time or once during the year. This way all students would have the opportunity to learn the new technology and demonstrate their knowledge from a unit.

  2. I am considering a similar format with artwork on my blog. One major snag that I have to research first is the parental consent. Our county has forms parents can fill out that say we can or cannot use their child in any type of public media. Right off hand, I know some of my students are not allowed but I do not know which. Does your county have anything like this?
